About this place
As the oldest surviving Catholic church in Chongqing, St. Joseph's Church (Ruose Tang) is a living testament to the city's modern history. Originally established in 1893, the building bears deep historical scars: it was severely destroyed by Japanese aerial bombing in 1939 during World War II, and the current structure is the result of a major restoration completed in 1946. Featuring a blend of Gothic and Romanesque architectural elements, it stands today not as a commercialized tourist attraction, but as an active, practicing place of worship serving the local Catholic community in the heart of the Yuzhong District.
